India After independence

January 31, 2020

India after Gandhi is a history book dealing with events after India's Independence [1947 - 2000's].

After reading this book I realized, I didn't know the history of my country even after studying formal history for more than 5 years in school. This history was never taught in regular school books. So this is where most of us might have no information. This history is even more relevant. The book covers the socio-political incidents of the last few decades in India, like:

  • The rise of cricket and Bollywood.
  • The rise of the IT industry.
  • The events which led to the formation of states such as Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra,
  • The consolidation of India from princely states such as Kingdoms of Travancore, Nizams.
  • The combined role of Nehru and Patel in unifying all of India.
  • The division of states based on linguistics even though national leaders didn't want it.
  • The beginnings of RSS.
  • The long debates just after independence on issues like the reservation for minorities & women; cry for Hindustani as the national language, which is still prevalent today.
  • The story of Kashmir, and divisions of united India,
  • The struggle of northeastern states such as Nagaland, Meghalaya
  • Formation of cities such as Faridabad by refugees. The sad stories of refugees of the war.
  • Violence after violence since independence,
  • The Starting of the world's biggest gamble > the " general elections" of India, and how revolutionary an idea it was at that time!
  • The world leader persona of Nehru and the effect of Nehru at the world's stage.
  • Indo-china relations, the ever so existing rift between India and Pakistan
  • The era of Indira Gandhi and emergency
  • Stories and Policies of Regional Leaders like Sheik Abdullah, Jyoti Basu

Well, the one thing I get from this book is there is a lot to learn about history from non-regular textbooks. This history is important and interesting.

Ending it with a quote which motivated me to read this book:

If you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you're going. And if you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.” - Anonymous
