Why Write

June 28, 2019

Writing: For some it's an art, for some drudgery. I regard writing as a great habit. Writing is something you can do for fun and yet get some worldly benefits. Here I try to enumerate the benefits of effective writing.

General benefits of writing:

  • Writing helps in exploring a subject matter in-depth and reason it out.

  • Instead of highlighting something in books, recalling the subject matter and writing summaries is a more effective way to learn and retain a concept. Writing solidifies learning Ref. A great utility of writing is being able to summarise big concepts and topics in a clear concise way.

  • With great writing skills, unpleasant tasks like writing documents, reports & proposals become somewhat undemanding and enjoyable.

  • Proficient communication skills are indispensable in every field. In the era of remote working effective verbal and written communication is critical.

Specific benefits for a student:

  • A major benefit of superior writing skills is an improvement in the quality of the answers in assessment exams. With the same level of effort on other parameters, one could easily gain an additional 0.2 to 0.5 pointer each semester because of better writing skills.

  • In internships writing reports and documents is a major part of your work. I had to write a report summarising all my work done as an intern. I was to be evaluated and extended a job offer based on this report. Reflecting on it, I can conclude that lack of proper writing skills can be a significant drawback in your success at work.

  • Some of the most lucrative paths after completing undergraduate studies are MBA, Masters & Ph.D, prospects of all of which are greatly affected by mastery of your writing skills.

  • In case of internships writing an eloquent proposal or cover letter provides a significant edge.

I don't know what opportunities await you, but with a better writing skill you will be better armed to make the most out of it.

I find writing as a fun and peaceful activity and a well-written piece is a great source of pride and joy.

Start a journal or weblog. The more you write, the easier it will be, and the easier it is to write, the more you’ll write, its a virtuous circle. - Joel Spolsky, CEO Stack Overflow
