Book Notes - 7 Strategies for Wealth and Happiness

June 25, 2019

After being awestruck by Jim's stimulating seminar videos on personal development, I had high expectations from this classic book, and it wasn't a let-down.

The book starts with the importance of having vivid, detailed year-wise goals with you at all times. Here Jim convinces readers to form these goals, which he asserts is the seed for all growth.

"Work harder on yourself than on your job" - Jim Rohn

Jim draws on the importance of learning through experiences, books, seminars... He advocates that 30 min of an intellectual meal for the brain is more important than a meal for the body.

He points out the significance of associating with successful and positive people. He argues that you should buy lunch for a successful friend so that you can spend an hour learning from him as much as you can.

Jim asserts that time is the most valuable resource and thus should be managed effectively. Everyone is given the same 24hrs, no biases here. The author advocates that planning your day, week, and month ahead of time is crucial. A week should be finished in your journal before it has even started. Another good message:

Don't spend major time on minor things and minor time on major things._

Example - A Parent spending 3 hrs watching television and 1 hour with his child.

Well while addressing the matter of money the book gives the 70-30 rule for expenditure and savings and builds a case for giving charity at around 10% of earning and that too from an early age.

Well very interestingly after forming a thorough case for each of his messages. He gives an example of a guy who returns home every night after a day of hard work at the job and wants to relax at home instead of following the author's advice of working on himself, so he watches television all night. No wonder he doesn't get ahead in life :).

Finally, the ending chapter focusses on the importance of having a better and positive lifestyle. A great lifestyle & class can't be developed from money but has to be built and is equally if not more important.

The ending notes are inspiring where the author poses and answers 3 excellent questions.

Why work hard?
Why not? What else are you going to do with your life? Why not see how far you can go? Why not see how much you can earn, or read, or share? Why not see what you can become or how much you can grow? Why not? After all, you’ll be here until you go. Why not stay here in style?

Why not me?
Some people have done the most incredible things with a
limited background. Some people do so well that they get to see it
all. Why not you? Why not you watching the morning mist over the Hebrides Islands off Scotland? Why not you soaking up history in the Tower of London or exploring the dark mysteries of Spain? Why not you
having lunch in one of those charming cafes overlooking the famous Champs Elysees in Paris?

Why not now?
Why postpone a better future when so much that is wondrous awaits
your command? Get at it today. Get some new books, make your detailed goal plan, take a millionaire out to lunch, find new ways to increase your productivity, develop a lifestyle of generosity and love, make a new effort to believe in yourself. And get moving.

Tough things for me to myself follow for now:

  • Giving charity
  • Schedule a lunch with a successful person
